DYFS Procedures

School personnel play an important role as reporters as they closely observe and interact with children on a daily basis.  Physical signs of abuse may include unexplained bruises or welts, burns, fractures and abrasions, or lacerations.  Indicators of neglect may include consistent hunger and/or lack of supervision, inappropriate dress, poor hygiene, and unattended medical needs.  Indicators of sexual abuse may include complaints regarding genital/anal areas, sexually transmitted diseases, and unusual knowledge about or preoccupation with sex.  Indicators of emotional abuse may include aggressive or withdrawn behavior, unusual fears, running away, and sudden change in mood or behavior.

By law ( N.J.S.A. 9:6-8.10 and 18A:36-25 ) and Department of Education regulations (N.J.A.C. 6A:16-11 ), any person having reasonable cause to believe that a child has been abused or neglected by parent or caretaker is required to immediately notify DYFS.  After informing DYFS, the school employee must inform the guidance counselor, vice principal, principal and/or any other designated school official so that law enforcement authorities can be notified.

The name of the reporter is kept confidential and reports to DYFS can be made confidentially and anonymously.  However, the DYFS investigator may need to clarify information with the reporter or may have additional questions, so a name and number must be given.  However, it does NOT have to be the reporter’s name.  The school principal will suffice.

Please remember it is NOT your job to investigate or decide whether or not the child is telling the truth, it IS your job to report it.

The number to call is 1-877-NJABUSE
